When you look at a garage door it seems rather like it's something that only a professional can handle. The size alone makes it intimidating. However, if you take it one step at a time you will find that it's really quite manageable. The very first step in learning how to install garage doors is taking measurements. Take these with the door up, and measure the space that goes from structural supports. You don't want to just measure the doorway, as this will give you false information. Once you have measured (twice for accuracy) bring the garage door back down. If you look closely you should be able to find whether or not your door has tension springs. If it does, leave the door up and disassemble it. If it doesn't, you probably have to disassemble the door with it down. Each door will be unique in its method of disassembly. Once you have taken the door panels down you also need to remove the garage door operator if you have one. At this point you have successfully disassembled the existing garage door. Once you have verified this you can screw the rollers down. You're going to connect the track pieces with extreme care. If the alignment is off even just a tiny bit, the wheels in the track may skip or stop. Once the end bearing, the brackets, and springs are installed per the manufacturer's recommendations you'll hang the garage door operator where it belongs. The very last step when learning how to install garage doors is to add the new trim back to the appropriate area and then paint. Step back, admire your hard work, and be prepared for the neighbors to start asking you how you did it.
